MAD Ski Project 2024: Makalu and Kanchenjunga
In the spring of 2024, as part of the MAD Ski Project, we set out together with Bartek Ziemski for Nepal with the plan to climb two eight-thousanders: Makalu (8,485 m) and Kanchenjunga (8,586 m). On May 12, we summited the fifth-highest mountain in the world without supplemental oxygen or personal Sherpa support. Bartek skied from the summit of Makalu, becoming the first person in history to do so from the very top. I documented the climb through film and photography.
Two weeks later, we stood on the summit of Kangchenjunga as the first team of the season, after all other teams had abandoned their summit attempts. Bartek became the first person in history to ski from the summit. I photographed and filmed the descent. During my own descent to Camp 4, I encountered difficulties and decided to bivouac at an altitude of 7,600 meters.
