NANDA DEVI EAST – MAY 2019

In May 2019, I joined the 80th-anniversary expedition to Nanda Devi East (7,434 m) as a filmmaker.

The mountain, located in India, was first summited by a Polish team in 1939 during what was also the first Polish expedition to the Himalayas. Eighty years later, we returned with a 10-member team, which included the grandson of one of the first summiters.

On June 27, 2019, two expedition members, Jarosław Gawrysiak and Wojciech Flaczyński, reached the summit. For the first time in my life, I climbed above 6,000 meters and conducted interviews with climbers returning from the summit.

A documentary, “Nanda Devi East: Mountain of Happiness,” was made from the expedition. In 2022, based on the events of 1939 and 2019, the film “The Curse of the Mountain. In the Footsteps of the First Polish Himalayan Climbers” directed by myself and Darek Załuski, was released.
